Schønherr is architectural client advisor to Sund & Bælt on the Fehmarn Belt Tunnel - one of Europe’s largest infrastructure projects and the world’s longest immersed tunnel, which in 2029 will connect Lolland in Denmark with Fehmarn in Germany.
Architecture, landscape, and infrastructure
As advisor, Schønherr contributes with specialized expertise at the intersection of architecture, landscape, and infrastructure. The assignment includes consulting on the design of the interface between the tunnel portals and the surrounding landscapes, the aesthetic design of the tunnel interior and related structures, and the planning of how excavated seabed materials are placed and integrated into the landscape.

The project is characterized by a complex structure with many sub-projects, developed both in parallel and at staggered stages. Here, Schønherr plays a central role in maintaining and refining the overall aesthetic vision acrossthe project’s elements. Through coordination and holistic considerations, Schønherr acts as the client’s architectural eyes, ensuring that the project’s architectural identity is preserved at every stage.
At the same time, Schønherr acts as a professional link between client and contractors. This includes handling contractors’ questions and ensuring that answers and decisions remain rooted in the client’s overall vision and ambitions for the project.
