Consultant for The Carlsberg City District – cultural heritage and climate adaptation as the foundation for urban life
Schønherr is consultant for the Carlsberg City Development Company. Through close dialogue, solid task comprehension, and delivered quality, we have established a strong collaboration that has led to continuous assignments of new projects. Schønherr has developed a series of significant urban spaces – including Thorvald Bindesbøll’s Square, Købke’s Square, Constantin Hansen’s Street, The West and East of the Hop Garden, Gærtorvet/Lagergade, as well as Ny Carlsberg Road. The assignments cover everything from initial sketches and design to construction supervision and follow-up in collaboration with the main contractor.
Developmentand continuation of cultural heritage
The Carlsberg City District is a new, dense urban district in Vesterbro, created on the historic grounds where the Carlsberg Brewery was located for more than a hundred years. The area carries a significant cultural heritage, and Schønherr has ensured that this heritage is preserved and transformed into an identity-shaping framework that ties the district’s history together with its new functions. Through analyses of the area’s narratives and an understanding of the new and future use, the urban spaces have become vibrant meeting places where past and present converge.
Integration of public spaces, urban life, and climate adaptation
The district’s location on a hillside has required solutions that manage rainwater and cloudburst events. Schønherr has integrated climate adaptation into the design of the urban spaces, so that technical functions are combined with recreational qualities. Water retention is merged with green outdoor spaces, creating value for both urban life and biodiversity – benefiting the Carlsberg City District and the surrounding Vesterbro neighborhood.
The new urban spaces demonstrate how cultural heritage, climate adaptation, and urban life can be united through holistic urban development and seamless collaboration with the client and other consultants.
