TOURISM AND ACCESSIBLE LANDSCAPES

"It is not always the spectacular places that leave the greatest impression – but those where you feel at home, without having been there before." - Steen Eiler Rasmussen

Schønherr designs destinations rooted in the identity, spirit, and needs of the place. We create landscapes that are inclusive, accessible to all, and grounded in the values and aspirations of the local community.

DESTINATIONS

“Places have a soul, and some call for silence and reflection – without seeking to entertain.”
– Karen Blixen

Schønherr develops destinations where natural qualities and local narratives form the foundation for sustainable tourism. We design experience-rich landscapes that integrate recreation, nature conservation, and local identity - respecting climate, cultural heritage, and ecological carrying capacity.

Drawing on cultural history and sense of place, we design trails, viewpoints, rest areas, and visitor infrastructure that support sensory and meaningful experiences.

We assess site-specific potentials and constraints, tailoring solutions to both ecological conditions and human use - balancing access and protection.

Through co-creative processes involving communities, businesses, and tourism stakeholders, we ensure ownership and long-term value, with a strong emphasis on accessibility, interpretation, and inclusive experiences for all.

ACCESABILITY AND WAYFINDING

“Universal design is the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design.”
– Ron Mace

Schønherr ensures equitable access to nature for all - regardless of age, mobility, or mode of transport. Through careful planning and design, we enable both everyday users and visitors to navigate the landscape safely and intuitively.

We develop path networks, wayfinding systems, and signage that allow users to explore the area independently and with ease. With a focus on universal design, we create inclusive solutions that accommodate wheelchair users and individuals with special needs.

Our approach connects urban and natural environments via green corridors that support both biodiversity and recreational access. We also integrate essential infrastructure - such as access roads, parking, andamenities - ensuring that functionality and user experience are seamlessly aligned.
