Struer Harbour

By virtue of its location directly on the Limfjord, Struer is a typical coastal town – with great potential but also major climate-related challenges. The expected future increase in both storm surges and cloudbursts threatens the city center, which is detached from the harbour and fjord by both mental and physical barriers – though not cut off from the intruding water masses.

The purpose of the climate adaptation project was not only to protect against flooding, but also to re-establish the strong connection between Struer’s town center and its scenic harbour areas – which for too long had lived their own life, disconnected from the city.

Seating walls along the road – in combination with a series of mobile elements – function both as the stopper that keeps storm surge water out, and as the sieve that allows cloudburst water to pass through.

This way, urban life is allowed to flow like water through the railway bridge arches at the central part of the harbour and down toward the waterfront, where the storm surge protection both safeguards the city and integrates naturally into the existing design of the harbour area.

Framed views through the arches toward the water guide the people of Struer down to the harbour.
