Silkeborg Square
In connection with the construction of a large central parking facility beneath Silkeborg Square, Schønherr was commissioned to create a new urban space above the concrete deck, which—according to the wishes of the client and citizens—should pay tribute to the artistic expression of the local painter and artist Asger Jorn.
The design of the square draws inspiration from Jorn’s “automatic drawing” from 1946, in which shapes and figures are translated into granite mosaics in the paving. On the city’s floor, quality craftsmanship is celebrated: the pavers’ interpretation and precision in the patterns creates a lively, tactile surface, where the natural variations of the granite emerge as a work of art underfoot.
At the same time, the space accommodates the city festival’s large tents, and keeps the square open for many other events that require ample room.
A composition of robust perennials, ground cover, shrubs, and multi-stemmed trees form a rich green space that supports biodiversity and contributes to a vibrant, inviting atmosphere.
At the center of the square, an elegant water feature takes shape as a reflecting pool, seamlessly integrated into the granite figures of the paving. The basin reflects the changing light of the sky, adding calm and movement that enhance the spatial experience and unifying character of the square.
Silkeborg Square is thus not merely a functional urban space, but a place where craftsmanship, nature, and art meet—framing community and experiences in the very heart of the city.
