Lisbjerg Recycling Station
Lisbjerg Recycling Station is a circular building in both a literal and metaphorical sense, where waste sorting becomes a natural part of sustainable welfare. Here, you take just as much as you give. The recycling station is designed as a sculptural entity that integrates gracefully into the landscape – between the soft contours of the slag storage and the green planting to the south west.
The surrounding hilly terrain includes an experience trail from which both the recycling centre and the nearby waste-to-energy plant can be observed, offering educational insights into the recycling station’s activities for both adults and children.
Ninety percent of the building is constructed from recycled materials, including concrete and wood, demonstrating how materials we often perceive as waste can, in fact, become valuable resources. The building and the site form one unified expression in form, materials, and detailing.
The logistics are simple and intuitive, with a circular geometry that ensures short distances and clear wayfinding. The container pit is modular, with movable walls that allow for easy reconfiguration to meet future needs. Waste handling is organized into visible fractions, efficiently distributed along the circle’s perimeter via an internal road, close to the Waste Centre’s operations. From here, staff can oversee the site and provide guidance and assistance to users.
Lisbjerg Recycling Station is an everyday public space where sustainability and user-friendliness go hand in hand – in short: Lisbjerg walks the talk!
